“My decision to study [Public] sociology at Radford University was influenced by the fact that it provides a concrete foundation to build on multiple fields and career paths. Ultimately, the quantitative reasoning, data analytics and statistics skills that I received helped to carve my path forward into the field of financial analysis and management.”
- Alex Williams, 2010; Management Analyst with Skyline ULTD., Inc.
"The Center for Social and Cultural Research (CSCR) at Radford University gave me a great foundation of technology, theory, and practice that boosted my confidence and resume. I produced research reports from raw survey data, provided support for classes, and helped others in the Sociology department with their research needs, all while working closely with the faculty. Many classes I took were supported by the CSCR, such as Survey Research Methods, Qualitative Research Methods, and Sociology Practicum (SOCY 493). Through an internship at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum, I was introduced to community-based research, grant writing, interviewing, and many more great experiences; after graduation I was hired as the museum's Collections Administrator, which has been a fantastic start to my post-college adventures. The CSCR continues to help facilitate the success of many students, and I am grateful to have been one of them!"
- Kasey Campbell, 2014; Collections Administrator, Wilderness Road Regional Museum
“During my time at Radford University, the Department of Sociology felt like home. Faculty members are dedicated to their students and provide hands-on experience outside of the classroom. I feel so lucky to have earned my bachelor’s degree from the Department of Sociology.”
- Amanda Burroughs, 2019; Graduate student, Virginia Tech Department of Sociology
“Being a sociology major is beneficial in that it provides many opportunities after graduation. Sociology is relatable to just about any work field in that it prepares you to work with diverse populations! I value the close-knit community that the Sociology program offered at Radford University, as well as the abundance of professional connections and mentors. The CSCR offered student work opportunities and invaluable internship experience that helped guide me after college. I am very grateful I had the opportunity to study Sociology as it’s opened my eyes to the work I can do in my own community.”
- Eileen Lagos, 2018; Program Associate with the American Society of Clinical Oncology
“Having a Sociology background made it easier for me to explain social inequality and cultural and social differences. It taught me to be mindful of everyone’s situation.”
- Bianca Dickerson, 2016; Quality and Training Specialist at the Council of Community Services in Roanoke, VA
“Sociology makes for a great major because it provides us with the critical thinking we need for everyday life. Sociology is everywhere and can be applied to everything.”
- Michelle Robertson, 2018; Justice System Navigator at Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley
